For basketball players, the offseason, especially the summer months, is the time to get bigger, stronger, and faster. Although most strength training takes place in the weight room, the basketball court is also a great place to improve in those areas.
We try to maximize our training time by incorporating strength training into players’ basketball training. A great way to combine both types of training is through the use of resistance bands.
Check out the video for these resistance drills:
- Build strength in the hip flexor by taking explosive strides, similar to those performed in defensive slides. Practice ball-handling by adding basketballs.
- Backpedal with the band to build strength in the quads. Drive forward with the ball for strength training in the legs and ball-handling practice. Finish the drill with a strong, explosive two-footed jump.
Question of the Day:
Do you incorporate any strength training into your practices or workouts? If so, what do you do?
